What a great year it’s been! Barry was everywhere in 2006, from Biography to American Idol, and everywhere in between. ‘Greatest Songs of the Fifties” entered the charts at #1 and ‘Greatest Songs of the Sixties” entered the charts at #2 (darned that cute little Hanna Montana anyway!) It seems the world is finally discovering what we’ve known for over 30 years now. That Barry really is the ‘#1 Adult Contemporary Artist of all time’.
How great was it to see some of the biggest shows on television clamoring for his ‘personage’ to appear on their shows? In February, we saw him perform ‘Copa’ and ‘Unchained Melody’ on ‘Dancing with the Stars’, then help Ellen D celebrate her 30th High School Reunion. After that, it was over to Martha’s kitchen where he learned what a refrigerator is, and finally to QVC to hawk his newest album where he broke yet another record by selling the largest quantity ever sold on the show.
Always the trendsetter, I do believe Barry was the first guest artist on American Idol to spend a week actually mentoring the contestants prior to performing on the show. And in most cases, it really showed. And as if he didn’t have enough going on in his life already, he actually kicked off the NBC Today Show’s Summer Concert Series onboard the world’s largest ship. Somehow, he still managed to make numerous appearances ET, The Insider, Extra, E-News and Access Hollywood to name a few.
I think the award for my absolute favorite appearance in 2006 goes to the ‘58th Annual Emmy Awards”. First, I just loved the tribute to Dick Clark, knowing what good friends they’ve been through the years. Second, watching Barry’s expression when, immediately after the tribute, they announced he won his Emmy and he didn’t realize they called his name right away. What a precious moment for a well-deserved accomplishment.
Unfortunately, September brought downtime for Barry when he entered the hospital for arthroscopic surgery on both of those gorgeous, swinging hips of his. However, always the trooper, he was up and performing again in record time with his appearance on ‘Good Morning America’ in October. As well as on stage with full blown concerts in Chicago & Atlantic City!
There are just way too many appearances to list here, but somewhere between the TV and Radio shows, the award shows, the benefits, and presenting a star to some local DJ’s on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one would almost wonder where he finds the time to still perform several weeks a month at the Las Vegas Hilton.
2006 was an incredible year! Let’s do it again in 20067...
2006 Charity Benefits
As always, Barry is so giving of his time when it comes to helping others and 2006 was no different. In May of 2006, Barry was the star of the ‘13th Annual Evening Under the Stars’ event to benefit the ‘AIDS Assistance Program’. In October, Barry was the headliner for the ‘17th Carousel of Hope’ benefit, for Los Angeles chapters of Juvenile Diabetes and the ‘Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes’. In December of 2006 Barry made a special guest appearance at the ‘SafeHouse of the Desert’ benefit which his good friend Suzanne Somers hosted.
2006 MM Charity Fundraising
With an online club all around the world and the size of ours, the days of raffles and fundraising has become difficult. The exchange rate from country to country makes it difficult, and the cost to ship prizes won, can become costly. Therefore, in 2006, we asked members to keep track of their contributions to the ‘Manilow Fund for Health and Hope.’ Although we have approximately 430 current members, we were only able to track a little over 100 members, but that alone was impressive. Contributions by our MM members are estimated at around $8,130 for the year 2006!
2006 Convention
The 2006 BMIFC Convention at the Hilton was another hit and a good time was definitely had by all who attended. Barry always seems to pull out all the stops during the convention concerts. And this is where we were first introduced to the 60’s album, with Barry sitting on stage in his director’s chair, hands folded in front of him and a great big smile on his face as we glanced around the room full of fans, all singing to the songs that most of them grew up on. It was great to see old friends that we rarely get to see the rest of the year. And, as always.....the BMIFC staff did a fabulous job. Is it 2007 yet?
